France
France is a significant player in the global music industry, exporting a wide range of genres including indie-folk, electronic dance, and Francophone pop. While icons like David Guetta and Daft Punk have led the charge for years, newcomers such as L'Imperatrice and Polo & Pan are gaining traction in western music markets.
In 2024, L’Imperatrice saw significant streaming boosts from cities like New York and Los Angeles following the release of their third studio album, Pulsar, on June 7th.
Country highlight
Germany
As one of the world's largest music markets, it's worth taking a look at Germany's music landscape. Local repertoire continues to dominate with the majority of longplay charts featuring German artists. Hip-hop and pop are the most popular genres, with artists like Luciano and RAF Camora leading streaming success.
TikTok’s ability to amplify the reach of domestic music has played a significant part in this expansion, creating a new generation of German music that caters towards Gen-Z listeners.
This year, nine out of the top ten artists in Berlin by cumulative YouTube views were Hip-hop artists. In addition, eight of those nine were native German artists, reinforcing the country’s preference for local repertoire.

Legendary artists
In order to reach legendary status, artists must have a lasting legacy with music releases that are over 30 years old.
As these are often catalog artists, it's uncommon to see new additions to this category. Still, this year saw 65 new legendary artists including Australian rock duo Air Supply, "Queen of Jazz" Ella Fitzgerald and Spanish hit-maker Julio Iglesias.
Artist highlight
Chappell Roan
One of the most notable career stage jumps in 2024 belonged to Chappell Roan. On January 1, 2024 the pop singer was categorized as mid-level with a Chartmetric score of 77.5. Eleven months later, her score peaked at 97.6 on November 5th, placing her within the top 1% of artists tracked in our platform.
Much of Chappell’s success can be attributed to the intense dedication of her audience, otherwise known as “superfans.” Superfans played a crucial role in helping the star create a grassroots movement around her music and performances, including appearances on NPR Tiny Desk and at this year's Coachella. These highly engaged fans amplified her visibility through word-of-mouth, social media campaigns, and consistent support for her projects.

Genre Highlight
K-Pop
When it comes to activating audiences in online spaces, K-Pop artists are building the blueprint for marketing in the digital age. Platforms like Weverse, TikTok, and Instagram allow fans to engage with idols through live chats, behind-the-scenes videos, and casual, unscripted content that feels personal.
Emerging groups like KISS OF LIFE, ILLIT, and RIIZE exemplify this approach, prioritizing short-form, accessible content and fan interactions over traditional music promotion. Proof of this can be seen by comparing fanbases from platform to platform, as follower counts across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify signify how K-Pop idols tend to reach their fans on social platforms.
This may also be a result of an inherently global fanbase. For example, many Korean listeners aren’t using Western platforms, whereas those in the U.S. prefer services like Spotify. To reach everyone all at once, Instagram and TikTok are the way to go.

Music Videos
Music videos, once a cornerstone of artist promotion and fan engagement, are undergoing a shift in relevance. In a landscape dominated by short form content, modern videos are often overshadowed by the success of their audio counterparts on platforms like Spotify. For instance, in 2023, 36 of the top 40 most-streamed Spotify tracks had accompanying videos, but the gap between streams and YouTube views averaged 731 million.
This trend highlights the declining role of music videos as primary touch-points for fans. However, genres like Latin music and K-pop demonstrate an enduring potential of music videos in today’s age. Latin artists, such as Karol G and Shakira, consistently achieve parity between YouTube views and Spotify streams, driven by global appeal and highly accessible platforms like YouTube.
Similarly, K-pop videos by artists like BTS and BLACKPINK dominate 24-hour viewership records, underscoring the genre’s emphasis on high-quality visuals and fan engagement.
This gap can be witnessed in two of this year’s top songs, “APT.” by Bruno Mars and ROSE, and “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter. Rooted in pop radio, “Please Please Please” saw far more streams than YouTube views. “APT.,” on the other hand, saw a much smaller gap thanks to the the song’s K-Pop roots.

Methodology
Here are some notes on our data collection methods, please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions about this report or Chartmetric in general.
✍ hi@chartmetric.com- The data is as of December 15, 2024, unless otherwise specified, and is prone to potential errors and discrepancies. Data is based on the artists and songs that Chartmetric has ingested, which may not include every musician in the world or all of their online profiles. Artists are not always tracked on every platform.
- Counts of subscribers, followers, viewers, and combined monthly listeners are not unique. If a user is subscribed to multiple artists, they are counted for each artist they follow, which is why total platform follower counts may exceed actual population numbers. The same is true for social media demographic data about gender and country breakdowns of platform audiences, which was measured using only new followers artists gained in 2024.
- In instances where artists or tracks were associated with multiple genres, their most highly associated genre was used according to the data and editorial discretion.
- Within the lists of top artists, non-artists and those whose primary career is not related to music were removed using editorial discretion.
- Not all social and streaming platforms are available in every country, i.e. TikTok is not available in India and YouTube is not available in China.
- Artist countries were only measured for artists with an associated country in our dataset. Country data was available for 22k new artists added between January 1 and December 15, 2024.
- An artist’s home country is determined through a multitude of factors, such as an artist’s country of birth and/or country of residence.
- Solo/group data was available for 746k of artists.
- Career Stage movement was measured as the change in Career Stage between December 31, 2023 and December 31, 2024. For profiles created in 2024, the last career stage for the year was considered. Then, both groups were added to obtain the total number of new artists added to each Career Stage in 2024. The totals omit those artists that remained in their Career Stage or those who lowered their stage (e.g. from mid-level to undiscovered).
- 49% of artists added in 2024 have an associated Career Stage.
